Who needs to have a carotid ultrasound scan?
If you have any of the following risk factors, we recommend you to have a carotid ultrasound scan:
- Carotid Bruit
- Family history of heart disease
- Family history of stroke
- Known coronary artery disease
- Medical history of Diabetes
- Medical history of high cholesterol
- Recent Stroke or TIA
What does the carotid ultrasound scan include?
If you have any of the following risk factors, we recommend you to have a carotid ultrasound scan:
- Take your relevant medical history
- Provide 10 minutes consultation
- perform common carotid arteries, internal carotid arteries, external carotid arteries, and vertebral arteries colour Doppler Ultrasound (Carotid Duplex Ultrasound).
- Explain all findings during and after your ultrasound scan
- Write an official scan report after or within 24 hrs, with appropriate images included in the report
- Recommend a follow-up ultrasound scan if necessary
- Offer GP or specialist referral and a Blood Test if needed
What are the most common findings of a carotid ultrasound scan?
• Luminal narrowing or stenosis of the carotid arteries (Carotid artery atherosclerosis). 33% of the stroke and TIA are because of significant narrowing in the internal carotid arteries. • Cancers or tumours around the carotid arteries like “Carotid body tumour”
Would I need a blood test?
In some cases, we will recommend you to have a relevant blood test.
What kind of preparation do I need?
There is no preparation for carotid ultrasound scan.
When will I get the results?
You will receive your results verbally after the scan. Besides, the practitioner will examine the relevant images after your appointment and prepare a written report after your scan or within 24 hours with any recommended actions. The report will be sent to you so that you can discuss the findings with your doctor, if required.
What happens during the carotid ultrasound scan?
Our vascular scientist will explain the procedure before your scan. You will be guided to lie down on your back on the examination couch in a suitable position. A small amount of water-based gel will be applied to your neck. Our specialist will move the probe on your skin to produce diagnostic ultrasound images. You will not feel any discomfort during your ultrasound scan. A Carotid ultrasound scan is regularly completed within 20 minutes. Ultrasound specialist will recommend the best course of action, depending on the ultrasound scan findings.
What are the risks of a carotid ultrasound?
There are no risks or side effects associated with the carotid ultrasound scan. Ultrasound does not use any radiation.
