Ultrasound is a useful modality and first choice in the assessment of the hip joint to detect and localize pathologies. Hip and thigh ultrasound is a dynamic, fast, and affordable scan for evaluation of hip and thigh injuries, arthritis, or hip wear and tear.
Private hip ultrasound can provide useful information on a wide range of pathologic conditions affecting hip joint components and thigh like tendons and muscles, ligaments, bursae and cysts, synovial space, articular cartilage, joint capsule, bone surface, surrounding soft tissues, peripheral nerve, or vascular abnormalities. What does the hip ultrasound scan include?
In this scan we will
- Scan your Bony structures (femoral head and acetabulum), Fibrocartilaginous structures (acetabular labrum), Cartilage layers covering the hip joint, Capsular-ligamentous structures, Synovial joint, Muscles and tendons, Synovial bursae, Neurovascular structures.
- Take your relevant medical history
- Provide up to 10 minutes consultation
- Explain all findings during and after your ultrasound scan
- Write an official scan report after or within 24 hrs, with appropriate images included in the report
- Recommend a follow-up ultrasound scan if necessary
- Offer GP or specialist referral and a Blood Test if needed
- Also recommend Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injection, Hyaluronic Acid Injection, or Cortisone (Steroid) injections if they are necessary.

In some cases, we will recommend a relevant blood test, steroid injection, Hyaluronic acid injection, or Plasma-rich platelet injection.
What kind of preparation do I need?
There is no preparation for the hip ultrasound scan.
What happens during the hip ultrasound scan?
Our Ultrasound Specialists will explain the procedure before your scan. When you expose your hip, you will be guided to lie on your back on the examination couch. A small amount of water-based gel will be applied to your hip. Our specialist will move the probe on your skin to produce diagnostic ultrasound images. You will not feel any discomfort during your ultrasound scan. A hip ultrasound scan is regularly completed within 15-20 minutes. Our Sonographer will recommend the best course of action, depending on the ultrasound scan findings.
When will I get the results?
What are the risks of a hip ultrasound?
There are no risks or side effects associated with the Hip ultrasound scan. Ultrasound does not use any radiation.
