Lymph Node Ultrasound Scan

Lymph Node Ultrasound One Area
Price: £197
A lymph node ultrasound scan is a safe, painless test that uses sound waves to examine lymph nodes in the neck, armpits, or groin. It helps detect enlargement, inflammation, infection, or suspicious changes that may indicate cancer spread. At London Private Ultrasound, GMC- and HCPC-registered specialists provide same-day appointments, immediate results, and full written reports.
Lymph node ultrasound is the first-line test for investigating swollen or abnormal lymph nodes.
When it’s recommended: persistent swollen glands, neck lumps, armpit or groin swelling, follow-up after cancer treatment, or unexplained fever and weight loss.
What it detects:
- Reactive/inflammatory nodes (e.g., after infection)
- Enlarged or abnormal nodes due to lymphoma or metastasis
- Differentiation between benign and suspicious nodes
- Guidance for fine needle aspiration (FNA) if required
Advantages: non-invasive, quick, radiation-free, safe for all ages.
What It Evaluates:
- ✅ Lymph Node Enlargement – Checks for swollen nodes due to infections, inflammation, or other conditions.
✅ Lymph Node Shape & Size – Differentiates between normal and abnormal lymph nodes.
✅ Benign vs. Suspicious Lymph Nodes – Assesses for irregular borders, internal blood flow, or other signs of malignancy.
✅ Infections & Inflammation – Helps diagnose reactive lymph nodes due to bacterial or viral infections.
✅ Lymphoma & Metastasis – Evaluates nodes for cancer spread from other areas (e.g., breast, lung, or melanoma).
✅ Fluid Collections or Abscesses – Identifies infected lymph nodes with pus or fluid buildup.
✅ Neck, Groin, or Axillary (Armpit) Lymph Nodes – Examines different regions depending on symptoms.
Why Get a Lymph Node Ultrasound?
- 🔹 Persistent or unexplained swollen lymph nodes
🔹 Suspected infection or inflammation
🔹 Monitoring lymph nodes in cancer patients
🔹 Assessing changes in existing swollen nodes
This quick, painless, and highly effective scan helps determine whether a lymph node is reactive (benign) or requires further investigation, such as a biopsy.

Private Lymph Node Ultrasound in London & St Albans
Same-day lymph node ultrasound for neck (cervical), armpit (axilla), and groin. Expert sonographers, fast appointments, and same-day reports. Self-referral welcome.
What is a Lymph Node Ultrasound?
A lymph node ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of lymph nodes in the neck, armpits (axilla), groin (inguinal), and other superficial areas. There’s no radiation. It’s the first-line test for swollen nodes, palpable lumps, post-infection checks, and targeted assessment in breast/thyroid/head-and-neck pathways.
- Locations covered: Central London (including the Harley Street area, W1), West & North London, and selected Hertfordshire sites.
- Appointments: often same day; evenings/weekends subject to availability.
- Report & images: clear, clinician-ready report with annotated images on the same day.
Which lymph node areas can be scanned?
Head & Neck
- Cervical chains (levels I–VI)
- Submandibular & parotid regions
- Supraclavicular fossae
- Thyroid/neck lump correlation when requested
Trunk & Limbs
- Axilla (armpit)—breast pathway nodes, post-vaccine nodes
- Inguinal (groin)—skin/leg pathways
- Epitrochlear (near elbow) & popliteal when clinically indicated
Common reasons to book
- New or persistent lump in the neck, armpit, or groin
- Swollen lymph node after infection or vaccination (follow-up)
- Breast/thyroid/head-and-neck specialist referral for nodal assessment
- Painful or tender node, redness, or suspected abscess
- Palpable armpit lump with normal or inconclusive breast imaging
- Pre- or post-operative node mapping and surveillance
Preparation
- No fasting is required. Wear a top that allows easy access to the area (e.g., neck or underarm).
- Avoid heavy moisturisers or deodorant in the axilla on the day if possible.
- Bring prior imaging or clinic letters if you have them.
How the scan is done
- You’ll lie comfortably; warm gel is applied to the skin.
- The sonographer examines the target region with a high-resolution probe and colour Doppler to evaluate vascularity.
- Typical appointment time: 15–25 minutes (longer if multiple regions).
What we assess: node size (short-axis), shape, hilum visibility, cortical thickness, border characteristics, echotexture, and vascular pattern, plus surrounding soft tissues.
Results you can understand
- Same-day report that states whether the node(s) look benign/reactive, indeterminate, or suspicious in appearance.
- Clear advice on next steps (watchful waiting, repeat scan, targeted blood tests, specialist referral, or tissue sampling).
- Digital images provided for your GP/consultant.
What if a biopsy is needed?
If a node appears suspicious or remains unexplained, image-guided sampling may be recommended:
- Fine-Needle Aspiration (FNA) – cytology; quick and minimally invasive.
- Core Needle Biopsy – tissue architecture for histology when required.
We can help coordinate a private lymph node biopsy with appropriate specialists and provide an estimate of fees before you decide.

FAQs
What does a normal lymph node look like on ultrasound?
Typically oval with a thin, uniform cortex and a preserved echogenic hilum. Vascularity is usually central/hilar on colour Doppler.
What features can look suspicious?
Round shape, cortical thickening (>3 mm), loss of hilum, irregular margins, abnormal or peripheral vascularity, necrosis, or matted nodes. These features guide whether follow-up or biopsy is recommended.
Can ultrasound detect cancer in lymph nodes?
Ultrasound can identify abnormal appearances that are suspicious, but only pathology (FNA/core biopsy) can confirm cancer. Your report will clearly state the level of concern and next steps.
How long does the scan take and when will I get results?
Most appointments take 15–25 minutes. You’ll receive a same-day written report with images.
How much does a private lymph node ultrasound cost?
Fees vary by region scanned (single vs multiple areas) and whether Doppler or image-guided procedures are needed. Contact us for current pricing and self-pay packages.
Do I need a referral?
No—self-referral is accepted. If you already have a GP/consultant letter, please bring it.
