A lymph node ultrasound scan may be performed for several reasons:
Evaluation of lymph node abnormalities: If there is an unexplained swelling or enlargement of a lymph node, an ultrasound can help assess its size, shape, and internal characteristics. It can determine whether the enlargement is due to benign causes such as infection or inflammation or if it raises concerns about malignancy, such as lymphoma or metastatic cancer.
Infection detection: Ultrasound can help identify and evaluate lymph nodes that are affected by infections. It can show changes in the lymph nodes, such as enlargement, increased blood flow, or the presence of abscesses or fluid collections.
Staging cancer: Lymph node ultrasound is often used as a part of cancer staging to determine if cancer has spread to the lymph nodes. By assessing the size, shape, and appearance of lymph nodes near the site of the primary tumor, doctors can determine if the cancer has metastasized.
Monitoring treatment response: For patients undergoing cancer treatment, ultrasound scans can be used to monitor changes in the size and characteristics of lymph nodes. This helps assess the response to treatment and determine the need for further interventions or adjustments to the treatment plan.
Overall, lymph node ultrasound scans play a crucial role in diagnosing and monitoring various conditions related to the lymphatic system, including infections, inflammation, and cancer. They provide detailed information about the lymph nodes and assist in making informed decisions regarding treatment and further investigations.

What happen during the scan?
You'll be asked to lie down on the couch. The clinician puts a lubricating gel on the skin by the lymph nodes. Then an ultrasound probe will be put on your skin. You may feel a little pressure when they move the probe over your skin but it still should be painless and comfortable. The clinician will write a digital report which will be sent to you via email. The report will include the images as well. This scan might take 15-20 minutes.
