General Ultrasound FAQs

This section provides a numbered list of frequently asked questions for private ultrasound scans, compiled from the available data.

  1. What is an ultrasound scan?
An ultrasound scan, or sonography, is a non-invasive procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of the inside of the body. This technique is used to evaluate various internal organs, blood vessels, and soft tissues for diagnostic purposes.

  2. Is an ultrasound scan safe?
Yes, ultrasound scans are generally considered safe as they do not use ionizing radiation. They are a common and safe method for monitoring pregnancies and diagnosing medical conditions.

A doctor’s or GP referral is not necessary to book a private ultrasound scan with London Private Ultrasound.

  4. How do I book an appointment?
Appointments can be booked easily and hassle-free online, often with instant confirmation. You can also contact us by phone or by submitting an online form with your queries.

  5. What should I do to prepare for my scan?
Preparation depends on the type of scan. For abdominal, pelvic, and bladder scans, you will likely be asked to arrive with a full bladder. For some scans, you may need to fast for several hours beforehand. It is always recommended to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.

  6. What happens during the scan?
You will be asked to lie on a couch. A clear gel will be applied to the area of the body being scanned, and a sonographer will move a handheld device called a transducer over your skin to capture images. The procedure is usually painless and you will be awake throughout.

Most ultrasound exams are quick to complete. A pelvic ultrasound may take about 20 minutes , while a more complex scan could take up to an hour depending on its requirements.

A transabdominal ultrasound is performed externally over the abdomen. A transvaginal ultrasound is a more invasive procedure where a specially designed probe is inserted into the vagina to get a closer and more detailed view of the pelvic organs.

  9. How will I receive my results?
