The current PrivateSono Heart Health Check combines a consultant cardiologist consultation, 12-lead ECG, echocardiogram and heart physical examination. What we assess

Rhythm, structure, function and cardiovascular risk

The tests answer different questions. ECG looks at electrical activity; echocardiography looks at structure and mechanical function; the cardiologist brings the results together in clinical context.

Heart rhythm

The resting ECG can identify atrial fibrillation and other rhythm or conduction abnormalities when present during the recording.

Heart valves

Echocardiography can assess valve anatomy and Doppler evidence of stenosis or regurgitation.

Pumping function

Left and right ventricular size and function are assessed, including overall systolic performance.

Heart muscle

Wall thickness, chamber dimensions and patterns that may be associated with cardiomyopathy or pressure overload are reviewed.

Pericardium

The echocardiogram can show fluid around the heart and other visible pericardial abnormalities.

Blood pressure effects

The examination can identify structural changes that may occur with longstanding hypertension.

Symptoms and family history

The cardiologist considers test findings alongside chest symptoms, breathlessness, palpitations, fainting and relevant family history.

Next-step testing

If the assessment raises concern about coronary disease, intermittent arrhythmia or another condition, further testing can be recommended.

Important limitations

A normal ECG and echocardiogram do not rule out every heart condition

The standard Heart Health Check is a strong first-line assessment, but further testing can be necessary depending on symptoms and risk.

  • A resting ECG records only a short period and can miss intermittent arrhythmias.
  • A standard echocardiogram does not directly show coronary artery narrowing.
  • Coronary artery disease may require CT coronary angiography, stress testing or invasive angiography.
  • Intermittent palpitations may require ambulatory ECG monitoring.
  • Blood tests or other imaging may be advised depending on the cardiologist’s assessment.

What is included in the Private Heart Health Check?

The current £449 package includes a cardiologist consultation, a 12-lead ECG, an echocardiogram and a heart physical examination. The cardiologist reviews your symptoms, medical history and risk factors and interprets the tests in the same clinical assessment.

What does the ECG check?

A 12-lead ECG records the heart’s electrical activity at rest. It can show rhythm abnormalities, conduction problems and patterns that may suggest previous or current cardiac stress. A normal resting ECG does not exclude every intermittent rhythm disorder or coronary artery problem.

What does the echocardiogram check?

An echocardiogram is an ultrasound of the heart. It assesses the heart chambers, valves, muscle thickness, pumping function, wall motion, pericardial fluid and blood flow using Doppler where appropriate.

Can this heart check rule out blocked coronary arteries?

No. A resting ECG and standard echocardiogram do not directly visualise the coronary arteries and cannot reliably rule out coronary artery disease. Depending on symptoms and risk, the cardiologist may recommend CT coronary angiography, stress testing or another investigation.

Who may consider a heart health check?

Assessment may be useful for people with palpitations, breathlessness, intermittent chest discomfort, reduced exercise tolerance, dizziness, a heart murmur, high blood pressure or cardiovascular risk factors such as diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking or a family history of premature heart disease.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. PrivateSono accepts direct self-referral for the Heart Health Check. Bring any previous ECGs, echocardiograms, cardiology letters, medication lists and relevant blood-test results if available.

How should I prepare for the appointment?

No fasting is normally required for the standard £449 package. Wear comfortable clothing that can be easily removed from the upper body for ECG electrode placement and the echocardiogram. Continue usual medication unless a clinician has advised otherwise.

When will I receive my results?
