About the Scan

What is a Private Pelvic Ultrasound Scan?

A private pelvic ultrasound scan is a safe, non-invasive diagnostic test that uses sound waves — not radiation — to produce real-time images of the uterus, ovaries, endometrium, fallopian tubes, cervix and bladder.

It is the first-line imaging investigation recommended by NICE for most gynaecological conditions including fibroids, abnormal bleeding, ovarian cysts, and PCOS. At Private Ultrasound Clinic, the scan costs £219, requires no GP referral, and results are provided the same day by an HCPC or GMC-registered specialist sonographer.

Both transabdominal and transvaginal scanning are performed where clinically appropriate, and both are included in the single inclusive fee.

Clinical Decision Guide

When to book a pelvic ultrasound — and which type is right for you

Pelvic ultrasound is the NICE-recommended first-line investigation for most gynaecological symptoms. Understanding which approach is most appropriate for your situation helps you get the most clinically useful results.

Who should book a pelvic ultrasound?

  • Heavy, irregular or painful periods
  • Bleeding between periods or after sex
  • Post-menopausal bleeding
  • Persistent pelvic pain or pressure
  • Bloating, fullness or abdominal swelling
  • Difficulty conceiving
  • Suspected fibroids, cysts, endometriosis or PCOS
  • Known PCOS requiring follicle count assessment
  • Monitoring a previously identified condition
  • Pre-IVF ovarian reserve assessment
  • IUD / coil position check

What ultrasound cannot diagnose alone

Pelvic ultrasound is a highly accurate first-line tool, but it cannot definitively diagnose cancer on its own. Findings that may require further investigation include complex ovarian masses, thickened endometrium, or unusual vascularity.

In these cases, your specialist will advise on additional tests — such as CA-125 blood testing, MRI, or specialist gynaecology referral. For endometriosis, ultrasound detects endometriomas but cannot exclude deep infiltrating endometriosis — laparoscopy remains the diagnostic gold standard for that presentation.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the most common questions about private pelvic ultrasound — written and reviewed by our clinical team.

What does a private pelvic ultrasound scan show?

A private pelvic ultrasound produces detailed real-time images of the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix and bladder. It is the recommended first-line imaging investigation for most gynaecological conditions.

  • Uterine fibroids: Size, number, location and impact on the uterine cavity — see our fibroid ultrasound scan
  • Ovarian cysts: Simple vs complex, size, characteristics — see ovarian screening
  • PCOS: Follicle count and ovarian volume assessed against Rotterdam diagnostic criteria — see our PCOS scan
  • Endometriosis: Detection of endometriomas; note that ultrasound cannot exclude deep infiltrating endometriosis
  • Endometrial thickening or polyps: Measurement and characterisation — see endometrial lining scan
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease: Thickened or fluid-filled fallopian tubes
  • IUD/coil position: Confirmation of correct placement
  • Findings requiring further investigation: Masses, complex cysts or vascular changes
How much does a private pelvic ultrasound cost in London?

A private pelvic ultrasound at Private Ultrasound Clinic costs £219, all fees inclusive with no hidden charges. This includes both transabdominal and transvaginal imaging where appropriate, an immediate verbal discussion of findings, and a formal written report emailed within 24 hours.

For patients requiring a more comprehensive assessment, our Gold Pelvic Health Package is available at £575.

Can a pelvic ultrasound detect ovarian cysts, fibroids and PCOS?

Yes. Pelvic ultrasound is the primary imaging method for diagnosing all three conditions and is recommended as first-line investigation by NICE.

Do I need a GP referral for a private pelvic scan in London?

No. You do not need a GP referral. You can self-refer and book directly online or by calling 020 7101 3377.

What is the difference between transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasound?

Transabdominal scanning uses an external probe over the abdomen with a full bladder. Transvaginal scanning uses a slim covered probe placed gently inside the vagina with an empty bladder. Transvaginal scanning is always optional and only performed with your full consent.

How do I prepare for my pelvic ultrasound scan?
  • Transabdominal scan: Drink approximately one litre of water in the hour before your appointment and do not empty your bladder.
  • Transvaginal scan: No preparation is required. An empty bladder is preferred.
Is a pelvic ultrasound scan painful or safe?

Pelvic ultrasound is completely safe. It uses sound waves, not ionising radiation, and has no known risks or side effects. The transabdominal scan is painless. The transvaginal scan may cause mild brief pressure but should not be painful.

Can I have a pelvic ultrasound during my period?

Yes. A pelvic ultrasound can be performed at any point in your menstrual cycle. There is usually no clinical reason to reschedule your appointment.

When will I receive my pelvic scan results?

Your specialist will explain their findings verbally immediately after your scan. A full written diagnostic report is securely emailed the same day or within 24 hours.

Can a pelvic ultrasound detect cancer?

A pelvic ultrasound can identify findings that may require further investigation for cancer, but it cannot definitively diagnose cancer on its own.

How does Private Ultrasound Clinic work alongside the NHS?

Choosing private care does not affect your NHS rights. If your scan identifies a finding that needs urgent NHS attention, your specialist will provide a formal written report to support referral.

Do you accept insurance or offer payment plans?

We accept major credit and debit cards, cash, and Klarna. For insurance claims, we provide a detailed medical invoice and receipt.
