Structure, function and urine findings considered together
Kidney health cannot be assessed fully by ultrasound alone. Ultrasound provides structural information about the kidneys, bladder and urinary tract, while blood tests assess filtration and biochemical function and urinalysis looks for markers such as blood, protein and infection-related changes.
The package brings those tests together before a results-based GP and Pharmacist review. This allows imaging, laboratory findings, symptoms and medication to be considered within one coordinated pathway.

Kidney & urinary tract ultrasound
What does the ultrasound component assess?
The scan is a structural examination of the urinary system. It complements, rather than replaces, kidney-function blood tests and urine testing.
- Both kidneys: size, symmetry, parenchymal appearance, cortical features and visible cystic or solid abnormalities.
- Renal collecting systems: assessment for hydronephrosis and visible calculi.
- Ureters: assessed where visible; normal ureters are often not fully seen by ultrasound.
- Bladder: volume, wall and contents, with post-void residual measurement where clinically relevant.
- Men: transabdominal prostate size may be assessed where urinary symptoms make this relevant to the selected pathway.
Ultrasound may not show every small ureteric stone or fully characterise every kidney or bladder lesion. Persistent haematuria, severe colic or indeterminate findings may require CT, MRI, cystoscopy, specialist review or another investigation.

Urine markers assessed within the package
Urinalysis supports evaluation of kidney and urinary health but should be interpreted with symptoms, culture results where needed and other investigations.
Protein & blood
Proteinuria and microscopic haematuria can be clinically important markers requiring correlation with kidney function, symptoms and repeat or specialist testing.
Leukocytes & nitrites
These can support suspicion of urinary infection, but a urine culture may be required to identify an organism and guide antibiotic sensitivity.
Glucose, ketones & concentration
Glucose, ketones, pH and specific gravity add information about metabolic state and urine concentration.

Which blood tests are included?+
The source package includes U&E markers such as sodium, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate, urea, creatinine and eGFR; liver markers; calcium, phosphate, uric acid and magnesium; glucose and lipids; and iron with TIBC.
What does the kidney ultrasound assess?+
It assesses both kidneys and the urinary bladder, ureters where visible, and bladder emptying when a post-void residual measurement is clinically relevant. Men may also have transabdominal prostate-size assessment within the urinary pathway when appropriate.
Does ultrasound measure kidney function?+
No. Ultrasound assesses structure. Kidney function is assessed using laboratory markers such as creatinine and eGFR, together with urine findings and clinical context.
Why is urinalysis included?+
Urinalysis can identify clinically relevant markers such as protein, blood, glucose, ketones, leukocytes, nitrites, pH and specific gravity. A urine culture may still be required when bacterial infection is suspected.
Why are there two visits?+
Visit 1 is used for ultrasound, blood sampling and urinalysis. Visit 2 takes place once the investigation results are available so the GP and Pharmacist can review completed findings rather than incomplete information.
When is Visit 2?+
The current source pathway describes the results review as taking place on the first Friday after Visit 1. Confirm the exact PrivateSono appointment arrangement when booking.
How should I prepare for the ultrasound?+
For a kidney and bladder examination, attend with a comfortably full bladder. PrivateSono’s focused urinary scan page advises approximately 500–750 ml of still water 45–60 minutes before the scan; your specific booking confirmation should take precedence.
Do I need to fast?+
Fasting is not normally required for a kidney-and-bladder-only ultrasound. Follow any different instructions provided for your package blood tests or combined imaging.
What optional add-ons are available?+
The source package lists Urine Culture +£70, Urologist consultation +£350, Nephrologist consultation +£350, and Flow Meter / Uroflowmetry +£200.
Can ultrasound diagnose a UTI?+
No. Ultrasound may identify contributing factors or complications, but UTI diagnosis depends on symptoms and urine testing. Culture may be needed in selected cases.
Can ultrasound detect all kidney stones?+
No. Many renal stones and secondary obstruction signs can be seen, but small stones and some ureteric stones may be missed. CT may be recommended when symptoms or clinical concern persist.
What happens if kidney function is abnormal?+
The GP reviews the results in clinical context. Depending on severity, the next step may include repeat blood or urine testing, medication changes, GP follow-up, nephrology review, renal artery imaging or other investigations.
Do I need a GP referral?+
No. The source package is designed for direct private booking without a GP referral.
