What is assessed on ultrasound?
The imaging component examines the thyroid and relevant superficial neck structures. It is designed to identify structural findings that may need surveillance, blood-test correlation or further specialist assessment.
- Thyroid gland: size, symmetry, echotexture, nodules, cysts and vascularity.
- Cervical lymph nodes: size and visible morphology in relevant neck regions.
- Parathyroid region: assessment for enlarged glands where they are sonographically visible.
- Salivary glands: parotid and submandibular glands for visible focal or inflammatory change.
- Thyroid nodules: measurements and sonographic features documented to guide appropriate next steps.
Ultrasound cannot assess thyroid hormone function and cannot confirm or exclude thyroid cancer by itself. Suspicious or indeterminate findings may require specialist review and, where indicated, ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration.
