What is included in the £799 Carotid & Stroke Health Check?
The package has five core components: bilateral Carotid Artery Doppler Ultrasound, a resting 12-lead ECG, an advanced cardiovascular blood panel, a 30-minute GP consultation and a pharmacist medication review. Visit 1 is used for the scan, ECG and blood tests; Visit 2 takes place after the reports are available so the GP and pharmacist can interpret the findings together and develop a personalised cardiovascular risk-reduction plan.

Carotid Doppler
What the carotid ultrasound assesses
The carotid arteries carry blood to the brain. Duplex ultrasound combines structural imaging with colour and spectral Doppler to assess plaque and blood-flow changes that may be relevant to stroke and TIA risk.
Plaque & atherosclerosis
Assesses visible plaque burden, wall thickening, surface irregularity and other structural markers of carotid atherosclerosis.
Carotid stenosis
Doppler velocities and ratios help assess whether narrowing is present and support grading of haemodynamically significant stenosis.
Peak systolic velocity
PSV is measured at key arterial segments and interpreted with other Doppler criteria.
End-diastolic velocity
EDV contributes additional information when assessing internal carotid flow and stenosis severity.
Flow direction & turbulence
Colour and spectral Doppler can demonstrate altered flow patterns, turbulence and vertebral artery direction.
CIMT / IMT
Carotid Intima-Media Thickness is assessed as a marker of arterial wall change and broader vascular risk.

What does the carotid Doppler ultrasound assess?
The carotid scan assesses both carotid arteries for plaque, atherosclerosis, narrowing, blood-flow velocities, turbulence and Carotid Intima-Media Thickness. Vertebral artery flow may also be assessed according to the vascular protocol.
Why is a resting ECG included?
A resting ECG records the heart’s electrical activity and can identify rhythm or conduction abnormalities present during the recording, including atrial fibrillation when it is occurring at that time. Intermittent rhythm problems may still require longer ECG monitoring.
Which advanced cardiovascular blood markers are included?

Who may consider a Carotid & Stroke Health Check?
The package is designed for adults with vascular risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking history, a family history of stroke or TIA, previous abnormal cardiovascular blood tests, known vascular disease or a wish for more detailed preventive vascular-risk assessment.
Can this health check rule out a future stroke?
No. No screening package can guarantee that a future stroke will not occur. The purpose is to identify modifiable vascular, rhythm, inflammatory and metabolic risk factors that may support prevention planning and appropriate specialist referral.
What happens if significant carotid stenosis is found?
The findings should be reviewed clinically. Depending on the degree of narrowing, symptoms and overall risk, next steps may include medication optimisation, cardiovascular risk management, CT or MR angiography and referral to vascular, stroke, neurology or cardiology specialists.
Do I need a GP referral and how should I prepare?
No GP referral is normally required. No special preparation is usually needed for the carotid scan or resting ECG. Bring a medication list and any previous carotid imaging, ECGs, cardiovascular blood results or specialist correspondence.
What should I do if I have active stroke or TIA symptoms?
Do not wait for a private screening appointment. Sudden facial weakness, arm weakness, speech difficulty, sudden visual loss or another new focal neurological symptom requires immediate emergency assessment. Call 999.
