Why combine imaging and blood tests?

Liver structure and liver blood markers answer different questions. A person can have abnormal liver enzymes with little visible ultrasound change, or structural fatty liver changes with relatively normal blood results. Interpreting them together provides a more useful clinical picture.

Pancreas

Visible pancreatic size and morphology, recognising that bowel gas can sometimes limit pancreatic views.

Spleen size and visible focal lesions; kidney size, cysts, stones, masses and hydronephrosis where detectable.

Abdominal aorta

Measurement and assessment of the visible abdominal aorta for aneurysmal dilatation and major structural abnormality.

Fasting usually improves upper-abdominal ultrasound views and helps keep the gallbladder distended. Water is generally acceptable unless your booking instructions say otherwise.

Which test answers what?

Ultrasound vs LFTs vs elastography

Liver ultrasound

Best for structural assessment, fatty change, gallstones, bile-duct dilatation and many focal abnormalities. It does not reliably stage early fibrosis.

Liver Function Tests

Blood markers can indicate liver-cell injury, cholestasis or changes in protein synthesis. They cannot show liver anatomy or gallstones.

Liver elastography

Measures liver stiffness as a non-invasive indicator of fibrosis risk. It complements rather than replaces conventional abdominal ultrasound and clinical interpretation.

How much is the Liver Health Package?

Which liver blood tests are included?

The 8-marker LFT panel includes ALT, AST, bilirubin, total protein, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), albumin, globulin and gamma-GT (GGT).

What does the abdominal and liver ultrasound assess?

The ultrasound reviews the liver, gallbladder, biliary tree, pancreas, spleen, kidneys and abdominal aorta. It can identify many structural abnormalities such as fatty liver change, gallstones, cysts, focal lesions and bile-duct dilatation.

Can this package detect fatty liver?

Ultrasound can identify changes associated with hepatic steatosis, especially when fat accumulation is moderate or greater. Blood results, metabolic risk factors and, when needed, elastography help provide additional context.

Can the package diagnose liver fibrosis or cirrhosis?

Ultrasound may show features of established chronic liver disease or cirrhosis, but it cannot reliably stage early fibrosis. Liver elastography, specialist blood tests or hepatology review may be recommended when fibrosis risk is a concern.

Why is a pharmacist medication review included?

Medicines, supplements and herbal products can affect liver enzymes or liver health. The pharmacist review considers prescribed and non-prescribed products, potential interactions and whether medication-related liver risk needs discussion with your usual prescriber.

Do I need a GP referral?

No GP referral is normally required for direct private booking. Bring previous liver scans, LFT results, medication details and relevant specialist letters if available.

How should I prepare?

You will normally be asked to fast for around 6–8 hours before the abdominal ultrasound, while water and essential medication are usually permitted. Follow the exact instructions in your booking confirmation, especially if you have diabetes or fasting may be unsafe.

Can the Liver Health Package rule out liver cancer?

No. Ultrasound can detect many focal liver abnormalities, but it cannot rule out every small or early lesion. Indeterminate or suspicious findings may require contrast MRI or CT, specialist review and occasionally biopsy.
