Ovarian Screening Ultrasound Scan

£197

An Ovarian Screening Ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging test used to evaluate the structure and appearance of the ovaries and nearby pelvic organs. Here’s what is typically assessed during the scan:

What Will Be Evaluated:

1. Ovarian Size and Shape

  • Both ovaries are measured in three dimensions.
  • Size changes can indicate potential issues (e.g. enlarged ovaries in PCOS or tumors).

2. Ovarian Volume

  • Volume is calculated to check for abnormalities—large volumes may suggest cysts, tumors, or other conditions.

3. Ovarian Follicles

  • Small fluid-filled sacs (follicles) are assessed, especially relevant in women of reproductive age.
  • Helps in assessing fertility and conditions like PCOS.

4. Presence of Ovarian Cysts or Masses

  • Type (simple, complex, hemorrhagic, dermoid, etc.)
  • Size and internal characteristics (fluid-filled vs solid)
  • Wall thickness, septations, calcifications, and blood flow using Doppler.

5. Blood Flow (Doppler Ultrasound)

  • Assesses vascularity of any masses or the ovarian tissue itself.
  • Helps differentiate benign from potentially malignant masses.

6. Fallopian Tubes (if visible)

  • May be assessed if dilated or affected (e.g., in cases of hydrosalpinx or ectopic pregnancy).

7. Uterus and Endometrium

Often evaluated at the same time:

  • Uterine size and shape
  • Endometrial thickness and pattern
  • Fibroids or other abnormalities

8. Free Fluid in Pelvis

  • Presence of fluid in the pouch of Douglas may indicate infection, rupture, or other pathology.

🩺 Why It’s Done (Common Indications):

  • Pelvic pain or bloating
  • Irregular or heavy periods
  • Postmenopausal bleeding
  • Family or personal history of ovarian cancer
  • Monitoring known cysts or masses
  • Fertility evaluation
